La coupe
(The cup)
2013-2016

Recovered newspaper, Kraft cardboard, solvent-free white glue, painted wood. Unfolded-folded honeycomb structure.

120 X 135 X 305 cm. Artist collection.

Taking a critical approach to trophies and exploring them sculpturally, I became fascinated by the famous Stanley Cup, the popular trophy of men’s hockey in North America. Using newsprint, I duplicated this cup to scale. From the precious metal in which the names of the winners are etched forever, the cup is transferred to the paper of print media, on which the words describing various news accumulate.

The honeycomb collage forms a voluminous yet lightweight three-dimensional structure. The honeycombs are supple and flexible, echoing knitted stitches. The expandable honeycomb characteristic of The Cup allows me to explore a modification of its form. The structure stretches and warps like an elastic accordion, exhibiting the physical resistance of paper.

The Cup is presented in a defeated, checkmated, prone position. Installed on a long table, it looks like a section of a scale model or plan-relief of an imaginary landscape, retaining a persistent memory of its initial volume. The honeycombs evoke topographic features and sinuous valleys.
